Why Your Shredder Won’t Auto-Feed Paper
If your shredder suddenly stops pulling paper from the auto-feed tray, the issue is often easy to fix. In most cases, dust-covered sensors, dirty or worn rollers, minor jams, or a safety switch that isn’t fully engaged are to blame.
Auto-feed shredders also aren’t designed for every type of paper. Thick stacks, glossy sheets, folded pages, or stiff materials like manila folders may not feed correctly. Before digging deeper, confirm the shredder still runs and accepts paper through the manual feed. If it doesn’t, internal parts such as gears may be worn and need professional attention.
Start With These Simple Checks
Always unplug the shredder before inspecting or cleaning it.
Sensor care
Paper dust and oil residue can block the sensors. Lightly clean them with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol.
Roller maintenance
Wipe rubber rollers with a barely damp microfiber cloth and allow them to dry fully. If they spin without gripping paper, they may need replacing.
Jam inspection
Use a flashlight to look for trapped scraps, staples, or labels. Remove debris carefully with tweezers or needle-nose pliers.
Safety switch check
Make sure the auto-feed lid is completely closed and the waste bin is fully seated.
